As soon as the group reaches an agreement or transaction (which can take many months and proposals), a new contract is drafted and union members vote on whether to accept the agreement. If the union does not agree, the process begins again. When employees of an organization vote for the union organization, the collective bargaining process begins. Collective bargaining is the process of bargaining between the company and union representatives. The aim is for management and the union to reach a contractual agreement that will be concluded for a specified period. Once this period is over, a new treaty will be negotiated. In this section, we will discuss the elements of the collective agreement. If the two parties are not able to reach a consensus on the collective agreement, it is called a bargaining alley. Different types of strikes are used to show workers` discontent with a bargaining alley.

An economic strike is a strike that results from dissatisfaction with economic conditions during contract negotiations. For example, 45,000 Verizon workers gathered in the summer of 2011, when contract negotiations failed (Goldberg, 2011). Both unions, Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, say the new contract is unfair because it requires Verizon workers to contribute more to health plans, and the company is also trying to freeze pensions at the end of the year and reduce the duration of the illness (Goldberg, 2011). Verizon says the telecommunications industry is changing and it can`t afford these expenses. A strike against unfair labour practices may take place during negotiations. The purpose of a strike against unfair labour practices is to get the organisation to put an end to what the union considers to be an unfair labour practice. A bargaining alley could mean that the union is on strike or that there is a lockout. The purpose of a lockout preventing workers from working is to pressure the union to adopt the contract. A lockout can only be legally implemented if the existing collective agreement has expired and there really is an impasse in contract negotiations. . . .
