Economic Cooperation Organization Trade Agreement

Turkey, along with Iran and Pakistan, is one of the three founding members of the ECO. The ECO, which can be identified as an organization based on trade and economy, is also an important platform that brings Turkey together with the Central Asian republics and South Asian countries. The heads of state and government of Turkey, Pakistan and Iran met in Istanbul in 1964 to develop regional economic cooperation and founded the Regional Development Cooperation (RCD) with the declaration they issued. The RCD gained legal status with the 1977 Treaty of Izmir. However, after the Iranian Islamic revolution of 1979, it suspended most of its activities and the organization gradually became inoperative. The Secretariat, under the direction of the Secretary-General, initiates, coordinates and supervises the implementation of the Organization`s ECO service activities and meetings. The Secretary-General, who holds the rank and status of ambassador, is responsible for all activities of the ECE in the Council of Ministers as an administrator of the Organization, participates in the meetings of all councils and performs other functions entrusted to him by those bodies. The Assistant Secretaries-General (3) assist the Secretary-General in the effective management of the Secretariat and in the implementation of the ECO objectives for economic cooperation in priority areas. Agriculture, health and industry – The main objectives of agriculture are the fight against desertification between Member States. Action plan approved at the meeting of the 1st Minister of Agriculture of the ECO, July 2002, Islamabad. For industry, technology transfer, small and medium-sized business development and privatization are ultimately the end of the day.

Health focuses on regional cooperation – establishing mutually beneficial cooperation with regional and international organizations. The elimination of trade barriers and the promotion of intra-regional trade, the role of the ECO region in the growth of world trade, areas of cooperation and related directions: cooperation work between ECO Member States is being carried out in various sectoral areas. These areas of cooperation are 1. Trade and investment, 2) transport and communications, 3) energy, minerals and environment, 4) agriculture, industry and tourism, the 5th project, economic research and statistics, 6. Human Resources and Sustainable Development, 7. Regional institutions and specialized institutions and international relations. In this context, branches have been set up within the ECO secretariat. 2. Trade – Framework Agreement on European Communities Trade Cooperation, signed by seven Member States, from 4 to 6 March 2000, Tehran (Iran Islamic Rep), at the first ECO Ministerial Meeting on Trade and Foreign Trade, deals with the phasing out of non-tariff barriers and the phasing out of tariffs in the region. It was preceded by the signing of the ECO Transit Agreement and the agreement on the simplification of visa procedures for ENTREPRENEURS from ECO countries at the 3rd ECO Summit held in Islamabad in March 1995.
